UK cuts Homes for Ukraine host payments and local-authority funding from January 2027

The UK government is cutting financial support for the Homes for Ukraine scheme, affecting Ukrainian refugees living with hosts and the households accommodating them. A written statement to parliament from the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government on 15 September said monthly host payments will fall from £350 to £100 and local-authority funding per arrival will drop from £5,900 to £3,300, with the changes taking effect on 1 January 2027. The scheme has supported 181,000 of the 234,000 Ukrainians who have come to the UK since 2022.
Why it matters: The change could push some hosts to stop participating or switch to rental arrangements, raising the risk of housing disruption for Ukrainian refugees who rely on the scheme. Supporters of the cut may see it as reducing public spending, while critics say it shifts costs and uncertainty onto refugees, hosts and local councils.
