Report says immigrants in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina paid $2.6 billion in taxes and contributed $31.7 billion to GDP in 2024

The American Immigration Council released a report on September 18, 2026 saying immigrants in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina paid $2.6 billion in taxes, held $7 billion in spending power, and contributed $31.7 billion to local gross domestic product in 2024. The report, produced with the City of Charlotte, Charlotte International Cabinet, and International House through the Gateways for Growth Challenge, said immigrants were 17.0% of the population but 20.1% of the employed labor force and 26.7% of STEM workers; it was launched alongside a local immigrant-integration event in Charlotte.
Why it matters: The report adds new local data to debates over immigration's effects on jobs, tax revenue, entrepreneurship, and public services in a fast-growing U.S. county. Supporters of immigrant-integration policies can use it to argue immigrants are economically important, while critics may dispute how such contributions should shape local policy.
